The importance of taking care of yourself

Taking care of oneself means being attentive to our well-being on all fronts: the body, emotions, and thoughts. Unfortunately, this is not self-evident for two main reasons:

  • No one taught us how to do it. We come from a society that prioritizes the external over the internal, productivity and profitability over well-being and health.
  • Precisely for these reasons, we lead hectic lives where even considering taking a break is seen as laziness. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

The more we take care of ourselves, the more balanced and fulfilling our lives become. It’s not a selfish activity; it’s a mark of self-respect. We acknowledge that we have unique personal sensitivities and value.

Moreover, we can’t fully support others or realize our potential if we neglect ourselves. Sooner or later, our bodies present us with the bill for our excesses in the form of illness, accidents, or burnout. We’ve forgotten that our being is more important than our possessions. To enter the realm of self-compassion and self-kindness, we need to establish daily rituals based on well-being, personal growth, and positivity. This includes moving toward a healthier diet with natural, non-processed foods, staying hydrated, practicing mindful breathing, and knowing when to stop to avoid pushing beyond our physical limits. Furthermore, we can take care of our emotions by seeking peace, being gentle with ourselves, and being receptive to any form of art that provides positive sensations. Finally, our thoughts can also find peace through relaxation, meditation, and conscious breathing. We can learn to direct our thoughts towards everything that is going well in our lives and express gratitude for who we are and what we have. These three levels of being are interconnected.

When we nurture our vitality, clear thoughts, and balanced emotions, we strengthen our immune system and feel internally stable and resilient, ready to find positive solutions to life’s challenges. Investing in oneself is the best thing we can do.

It brings numerous benefits to our daily lives:

  • We reduce stress and anxiety through increased self-confidence.
  • Our concentration and creativity improve, making us more effective, not just in external productivity, but in the fulfillment of our lives.
  • Our inner strength enables us to maintain better relationships with others and become a solid support in positive social interactions.
  • We avoid burnout and move forward serenely, day by day, in balance.

Taking care of oneself requires internal change, giving oneself permission to dedicate time and attention to oneself. It involves reevaluating our priorities and acting differently, such as setting healthy boundaries to avoid being overwhelmed by the demands of the other’s world, establishing regular practices that maintain our well-being, and scheduling moments just for ourselves. By recognizing that we are changing and evolving towards a new well-being, we can celebrate these small moments and personal achievements. This attention to our successes amplifies our positive attitude towards ourselves.

Thus, out of love and respect for ourselves, let us decide to take care of ourselves, for our benefit and the benefit of those around us.

When we give ourselves permission to thrive and cultivate personal kindness, we invite others to do the same.
